Chapter 12 β The Field That Changed Everything
Scene: The Family's Agricultural Land β Early Morning
Harvest season arrived, and the entire family travelled to their agricultural fields.
Kethan wanted to understand the work that supported the household. He wore a mustard kurta and practical trousers, tying his long hair into a braid before stepping into the field.
Padma demonstrated how to gather the stalks. Prakash showed him how to carry the bundles, while Saroja arranged food and drinking water for the elders.
The morning began with laughter.
Then Grandfather stumbled.
Kethan immediately dropped the bundle in his hands and rushed to support him. The others gathered around in alarm.
"Thatha, sit down. Slowly."
He helped Grandfather to a safe place and called Madhava. The family followed the medical advice they had previously received, ensuring Grandfather was comfortable before resuming their work.
Once everything was under control, Kethan returned to help with the harvest.
Padma watched him.
"You don't have to do everything yourself."
"I know. But I want to help."
She nodded.
By afternoon, Kethan's clothes were dusty, his hands were tired, and his braid had loosened. Yet he was smiling.
For the first time, he felt he had earned a place in the family through more than his marriage to Ananya.
As the sun descended, Athamma handed him a clean towel.
"You worked hard today."
Kethan looked at her.
"Thank you, Athamma."
She looked away, pretending the conversation was finished.
During the journey home, Saroja quietly spoke to Padma.
"We spent so long trying to change him into the person we expected."
Padma looked towards Kethan, who was helping Grandfather into the house.
"And somewhere along the way, he became the person we needed."
Neither sister knew whether the family could face the outside world with the same understanding.
But the bond between them had become stronger than their old resentment.
