Chapter 13 — Keerthana

Scene: The Bedroom — Late Afternoon

Kethan had become comfortable experimenting with different feminine outfits, but he still struggled to explain what those experiences meant to him.

One afternoon, he sat before the mirror while Saroja arranged his long braid. Padma was sorting jewellery beside them.

"You have so many hair clips now," Padma teased. "We should give you a proper name for all these dressing sessions."

Kethan smiled.

"Like what?"

Saroja considered him carefully.

"What about Keerthana?"

The room fell silent.

Kethan repeated the name softly.

"Keerthana."

It sounded unfamiliar at first. Then it brought him an unexpected sense of warmth.

Padma smiled. "It suits you."

Kethan looked at his reflection for a long time.

"I don't know whether I want to change everything about my life. I only know that when I dress this way, I feel more comfortable than I expected."

Saroja held his hand.

"Then take your time. You don't have to answer every question today."

That evening, Athamma called from the kitchen.

"Kethan! Come and help me!"

He hurried towards her.

She glanced at his long braid and then said, almost casually, "Keerthana, bring the coriander from the basket."

He stopped in surprise.

She had used the name without announcing that she was accepting anything.

He fetched the coriander, his eyes bright with emotion.

Later, Madhava overheard Padma using the name and looked uncomfortable.

"Why are you all encouraging this?"

Saroja answered calmly, "We aren't forcing him to become anyone. We're giving him space to understand himself."

Madhava said nothing.

That night, Kethan wrote the name in a notebook. Beneath it, he wrote a question:

Can I be honest about who I am and still remain the person my wife loves?

He had no answer yet.

But he was finally ready to face the question.
