Chapter 14 — The Saree Before the Mirror

Scene: The Family Home — A Few Weeks Before Ananya's Return

The family was preparing for a festival when Saroja brought an old silk saree into the bedroom.

Padma found matching bangles, while Lakshmi placed a small jewellery box on the dressing table.

Kethan stared at the saree.

"You want me to wear this?"

Saroja nodded.

"Only if you want to."

He hesitated before agreeing.

The sisters helped him drape the teal silk saree, carefully arranging its gold border. His hair had grown to mid-back and was gathered into a long braid decorated with jasmine flowers.

When he finally looked into the mirror, he became silent.

He did not see a joke or a costume. He saw someone who had gradually become more comfortable with a side of himself he had hidden for years.

Padma stood behind him.

"What are you thinking?"

"I'm thinking about Ananya."

Padma's expression softened.

"Have you told her?"

"No."

"Then you must speak to her."

Kethan lowered his eyes.

"What if she hates me?"

Saroja answered gently, "She deserves honesty, and so do you. Whatever happens, you must allow her to understand your feelings."

He knew they were right.

That evening, he called Ananya. They spoke about her work, Grandfather's health, and their plans for the future.

Twice, Kethan nearly told her everything.

Twice, he lost his courage.

Before ending the call, Ananya smiled.

"I miss you. I have a surprise for you."

"What surprise?"

"I'm not telling you. You'll find out soon."

After the call, Kethan sat alone in his room.

He knew Ananya's return was approaching, and he could no longer avoid the conversation forever.

The maroon saree that Saroja had selected for the festival lay folded beside him.

He wondered whether the person who had once loved him for his honesty could accept the truth he had been afraid to share.

For the first time, he decided that he would try.
