Chapter 15 — The Return

Scene: The Family Home — Evening, One Year Later

The house was unusually busy.

Lakshmi prepared a special dinner, Madhava arranged fresh flowers at the entrance, and Saroja and Padma repeatedly looked towards the road.

Ananya was returning from abroad after one year.

Kethan stood before the mirror in his bedroom.

He wore a maroon silk saree with a broad gold border. His long, dark hair reached well down his back and had been carefully arranged into a thick braid decorated with jasmine. Simple gold earrings and bangles completed the look.

His hands trembled as he adjusted the pleats.

Saroja entered quietly.

"Are you ready?"

"No."

She held his hand.

"Then don't pretend to be ready. Just be honest when she arrives."

A vehicle stopped outside.

Ananya stepped through the doorway carrying her suitcase. She looked tired from travelling but smiled when she saw her parents and sisters.

"Amma!"

Lakshmi embraced her. Grandfather blessed her, and Padma took the suitcase.

Then Ananya looked beyond them.

A person stood near the carved wooden pillar, dressed in a maroon silk saree. A long jasmine-decorated braid fell down their back.

Ananya stared.

She looked at the saree, the jewellery, and finally the familiar face.

Her suitcase slipped from her hand and struck the floor.

"Kethan?"

Nobody answered.

She took one uncertain step forward.

"Kethan… is that you?"

He lowered his eyes, unable to speak.

Ananya's expression changed from confusion to disbelief.

She looked at her sisters.

"What happened here?"

Padma stepped forward, but Ananya raised her hand.

"No. I want to hear it from him."

Kethan forced himself to look at her.

"Ananya, please let me explain."

She stared at him, tears beginning to form.

"You have been living like this while I was away? For a whole year? And you never told me?"

Her voice broke.

"I was afraid," he whispered. "I was afraid you would stop loving me."

Ananya looked at the family gathered behind him. She saw Saroja's worried expression, Padma's guilt, Lakshmi's tears, and Athamma standing silently beside Grandfather.

Then she looked back at the person she had married.

"I left you with my family because I trusted them to look after you. I thought I knew everything about the person I was coming home to."

Kethan's eyes filled with tears.

"I am still the person who loves you. But there are things about myself I never understood until this year."

Ananya stepped closer.

"Then why didn't you trust me enough to tell me?"

He had no answer that could undo the hurt.

For a long moment, neither moved.

Finally, Ananya reached towards the jasmine flowers in his braid, then stopped before touching them.

"Can we talk?" she asked.

Kethan nodded.

She picked up her suitcase.

"Not here. Not in front of everyone."

He followed her towards their room, leaving the family frozen in the doorway.

As the door closed, Athamma sat down heavily. Grandfather placed his hand over hers.

"Let them speak," he murmured.

Outside, the evening lamps flickered in the breeze.

Inside the room, Ananya stood facing the husband she had left a year ago—and the person he had become while she was away.

She looked at him through tears.

"Tell me everything, Kethan."

He took a deep breath.

And for the first time, he began.
