Chapter 10 — The Daughter the House Never Expected

Scene: The Family Home — Several Months Later

Kethan's hair had grown beyond his shoulders, and his confidence had slowly increased.

At home, he often wore a long frock or chudidhar while helping with cooking, cleaning, and other responsibilities. He experimented with different hairstyles and occasionally decorated his braid with jasmine flowers.

The family still had mixed feelings.

Madhava worried about what relatives might say. Ravi believed Kethan deserved the freedom to understand himself. Prakash remained uncertain but appreciated his contribution to the household.

One morning, Kethan appeared in the courtyard wearing a lavender anarkali with his hair arranged in a braid.

Grandfather smiled.

"You look happy today."

Kethan paused.

"Do I?"

"Your face answers before your mouth does."

He sat beside Grandfather and helped arrange his medicines.

Athamma watched from the doorway. She had seen Kethan patiently care for her husband through difficult mornings and restless nights. He remembered the medicine schedule and never complained when Grandfather repeated the same questions.

Her feelings were becoming more complicated than her rules.

Later, while Kethan served tea, Athamma quietly placed a fresh jasmine garland beside his cup.

"Your hair is long. Flowers will stay better if you braid it properly."

Kethan stared at her in surprise.

"Thank you, Athamma."

She turned away as though the conversation meant nothing.

But Kethan understood that something had changed.

That evening, however, his happiness gave way to anxiety.

What would Ananya think when she returned? Would she recognise the person he had become? Would she feel betrayed that he had kept these feelings private?

Kethan removed the flowers from his braid and placed them carefully beside the mirror.

He could no longer imagine returning to the silence of his earlier life.

He needed to find the courage to be honest with the person he loved.
