Chapter 9 — A Braid, a Flower, and a Scolding
Scene: The Front Veranda — Early Morning
As Kethan's hair grew longer, managing it became increasingly difficult.
Saroja taught him to make a ponytail. Padma showed him how to create a simple bun. Eventually, they began teaching him to braid his hair.
"Right section over the middle," Padma instructed. "Now the left section."
"I've lost track!"
"You've lost track of your own hair?"
"There's too much of it!"
The sisters laughed until Saroja came to help.
Soon, Kethan could manage a simple braid himself. On special mornings, the sisters decorated it with fresh jasmine flowers.
The first time he saw the flowers arranged in his hair, he touched them gently and smiled at his reflection.
Athamma appeared in the veranda.
"Flowers in your hair? Have you finished cleaning the kitchen?"
Kethan lowered his head.
"Yes, Athamma."
"Then why is the rangoli unfinished?"
He had forgotten it.
Feeling embarrassed, he immediately collected the rice flour and began drawing the design. His braid fell over his shoulder as he worked.
Athamma inspected the first few circles.
"Your design is crooked."
Kethan looked up, frustrated.
"I'm trying, Athamma. I cannot learn everything in one day."
The courtyard fell silent. It was the first time he had answered her without immediately apologising.
Athamma's expression hardened. Then she took the bowl and demonstrated how to draw the first curve.
"Hold it closer to the ground. Your hand is too high."
Kethan followed her instructions.
When they finished, the design was imperfect but beautiful.
"Tomorrow, do it better," she said before walking away.
Padma whispered, "That was practically a compliment!"
Kethan laughed.
For the first time, Athamma had not merely criticised him. She had taught him.
