Chapter 6 — The First Braid
Later that afternoon, Lakshmi brought a wooden stool and placed it before the mirror.
“Your hair has become even longer,” she said in amazement. “May I comb it?”
Ravi hesitated, then nodded.
She gently divided his glossy black hair into sections and combed it from the ends upward. She worked slowly so that the strands would not tangle.
His hair fell past his hips and reached his waist, shining in the afternoon sunlight.
Lakshmi smiled with delight.
“I have always admired your hair. Now I have an excuse to learn something new.”
She made a thick braid, weaving jasmine flowers into it. When she finished, she draped the braid over his shoulder.
Ravi examined the result in the mirror.
“It's beautiful,” he admitted. “But don't tell the entire village you did this!”
Lakshmi burst into laughter.
“Your secret is safe with me.”
She placed her hand on his shoulder. He covered it with his own.
In the mirror, their expressions were different—his still uncertain, hers gentle and reassuring—but their affection remained unchanged.
