Chapter 7 — A Little Kajal and a New Smile
Over the next few days, Ravi became more comfortable experimenting with his appearance, though he remained determined to understand the magic.
Lakshmi introduced him to her dressing table: a small box of kajal, a compact mirror, a few bangles, a bottle of perfume, and a collection of bindis.
“Do I really need all of this?” Ravi asked.
“Of course not,” she replied. “We can try things, and you can decide what you like.”
She applied a thin line of kajal around his eyes and placed a small maroon bindi on his forehead. A pair of gold jhumka earrings completed the look.
Ravi looked into the mirror.
His waist-length hair, now arranged in a thick jasmine-decorated braid, framed the transformed version of his familiar face.
He tilted his head.
“It's strange,” he admitted. “I never imagined seeing myself like this.”
“Do you dislike it?”
He considered the question.
“I don't know yet. But I like that you're helping me instead of laughing at me.”
Lakshmi kissed his forehead.
“That's what marriage means to me.”
And for the first time since the transformation, Ravi smiled without forcing himself.
