Chapter 5 — Learning to Live With the Magic
Ravi initially refused to leave the bedroom.
He tried removing the bangles, but they disappeared in a flash of golden light and reappeared on his wrists. When he attempted to change the saree, the cloth shimmered and returned to its original form.
He became frustrated.
“I don't even know how to walk comfortably in this,” he complained.
Lakshmi brought him a glass of water and sat beside him.
“Then we will take it one step at a time. You don't have to pretend to be comfortable when you aren't.”
She helped him adjust the pleats and secure the pallu over his shoulder. She showed him how to sit without crushing the silk and how to move without stepping on its hem.
Ravi slowly stood.
He took one step, then another.
The saree swayed around his ankles. His enormous length of hair moved behind him like a dark veil.
He glanced at the mirror and sighed.
“I still feel like myself inside.”
“That's what matters,” Lakshmi answered.
For the first time that morning, he smiled.
