Chapter 4 — The Morning Transformation
Ravi woke to the sound of birds outside the window.
Something felt unfamiliar. His hair was no longer merely falling across the pillow; it seemed even longer, cascading over his shoulders and down to his waist.
He sat up abruptly.
His nightclothes had transformed into a red silk saree, pleated neatly around his waist. Gold bangles adorned his wrists, small earrings glittered at his ears, and a delicate red bindi appeared on his forehead.
He stared at his hands.
Then he saw his reflection in the brass mirror.
The face was unmistakably his, yet the magic had transformed his appearance into a feminine form. His features were softer, and his waist-length hair framed his face like a dark curtain.
“Lakshmi!” he cried. “What has happened to me?”
His wife rushed into the room and stopped in astonishment.
For several moments, neither spoke.
Finally, she approached him and held his trembling hands.
“Ravi, look at me. Whatever has happened, you are still the person I love.”
He looked at the saree, then at his reflection.
“But I told you I never wanted to wear this!”
“I remember,” she whispered. “We will find out what happened. I won't leave you alone.”
