Chapter 3 — The Night of Golden Shadows
When Lakshmi returned from her bath, she searched the bed for the saree.
“Where did it go?” she wondered aloud.
After finding it in the wardrobe, she felt relieved. She had forgotten putting it away, she thought.
That night, the couple ate dinner together. They talked about the harvest, laughed over village gossip, and prepared for bed.
Ravi let his hair down and spread it across his pillow. Lakshmi ran a comb through the long strands until they were smooth.
“You should let me braid it someday,” she whispered.
“Only if you promise not to make me wear a saree,” he joked.
They laughed, embraced, and fell asleep.
But at midnight, the wardrobe began to glow.
The red saree slowly unfolded by itself. Golden threads rose into the air like ribbons of light, drifting toward Ravi's sleeping body.
His long hair lifted from the pillow. A gentle wind swirled around the bed, although every window was closed.
The goddess's ancient magic had awakened.
By dawn, nothing about Ravi's life would be the same.
