Chapter 13 — The First Independent Shopping Day
Sowjanya had always depended on others when choosing feminine clothing. Now she wanted to visit a shop alone and make her own decisions.
She wore a simple pink kurti, white leggings, and a long braid. Her heart raced as she entered a clothing store filled with colorful fabrics.
At first, she hesitated. She looked at the sarees, blouses, and chudidhars, wondering whether she would feel comfortable asking for help.
A friendly shop assistant greeted her.
Sowjanya slowly began choosing outfits. She selected a sky-blue chudidhar, a maroon saree, and a floral kurti. She also purchased comfortable innerwear suited to her needs.
The experience was more emotional than she expected. These were ordinary purchases for many people, but for Sowjanya, they represented independence.
When she returned home, Lakshmi Devi admired her choices.
"You selected everything yourself?" her mother asked.
Sowjanya smiled proudly.
"Yes, Amma. I wanted to learn."
That evening, she arranged her new clothes in the wardrobe. Each outfit represented a small step toward a life where she could make her own choices without fear.
