Chapter 12 — The First Steps of Transition
Sowjanya began her medically supervised transition after careful discussions with her healthcare team. Every step was taken with her informed consent, and she attended regular follow-up appointments.
The changes came gradually. She learned to be patient with her body and emotions. Some days brought excitement; others brought uncertainty.
Lakshmi Devi remained a steady source of support.
Sowjanya continued exploring her appearance. Her long dark hair became a part of her identity. She experimented with braids, buns, and loose hairstyles, choosing different styles for different occasions.
She also began building a wardrobe that reflected her comfort and personal taste. Sky-blue chudidhars, floral kurtis, traditional sarees, and simple everyday outfits became familiar choices.
The villagers gradually grew accustomed to seeing her as Sowjanya. Some welcomed her warmly, while others needed time to understand.
Sowjanya learned that confidence did not mean never feeling afraid. It meant continuing to live honestly despite fear.
One morning, she looked into the mirror and smiled.
"I am still the same person who wanted to protect people," she thought. "Now I am learning how to protect myself, too."
Her new life was taking shape.
