Chapter 7: The Woman Devika Invented
Days passed. Devika continued trying to shape every part of Aaradhyaβs public appearance. She selected outfits, controlled appointments, and demanded that employees use the new name.
Some days, Arjun found himself looking in the mirror and recognising a feminine presentation that had once seemed unfamiliar. On other days, the sight filled him with anger because he knew how much of it had been imposed.
He began asking himself difficult questions. If he enjoyed some feminine clothes, did that mean he had to accept everything Devika demanded? If he chose a new name, could it be his rather than hers? Could he explore who he was without surrendering his freedom?
The answers came slowly. He could choose what to wear. He could decide what name felt right. He could explore gender without accepting forced medication, unwanted procedures, or sexual exploitation.
Devika wanted him to believe there were only two possibilities: total obedience or total failure. Aaradhya began to imagine a third possibility.
Freedom.
