Chapter 6: The Lodge of Mirrors
Devika owned a lodge on the edge of the city. Its reception area was brightly lit, its rooms carefully maintained, and its employees trained to smile at every guest. Behind the polished reception desk, however, lay a different world.
Devika introduced Aaradhya to the staff as someone who would live and work there. She spoke about customers, room assignments, and earnings, treating his future as though it had already been decided.
Then she explained what she expected him to do. Arjun understood that she intended to exploit him sexually for money.
βNo,β he said. βI wonβt do that.β
Devika reminded him of the room she had provided, the clothes she had purchased, and the money she claimed he owed.
βYou belong to this lodge now.β
But Arjun did not belong to her. Coercion did not become consent simply because it was dressed up as gratitude or employment.
That night, another employee, Maya, found him crying in an empty corridor.
βIf you want to leave,β she whispered, βdonβt tell her until you have a safe plan.β
For the first time, someone had offered him help without demanding anything in return.
