Chapter 9: The Price of Freedom
With Mayaโs help, Aaradhya reached a safe place and contacted people who could help with shelter, medical advice, and protection from exploitation.
A medical professional explained that unprescribed hormonal tablets could be dangerous and that any gender-affirming treatment should be voluntary and supervised. Aaradhya arranged an evaluation and stopped relying on Devikaโs instructions.
The road ahead was difficult. There were questions about money, identity, housing, and the fear of being found. But Aaradhya began making decisions independently.
The name stayedโnot because Devika had chosen it, but because Aaradhya eventually decided it belonged to her.
She chose her own clothes. She chose whether to wear a saree, a dress, or ordinary everyday clothing. She decided which piercings, if any, she wanted. She began rebuilding relationships on her own terms.
Her femininity no longer served as proof of Devikaโs power. It became one part of her own life.
