Chapter 6 β The Work Nobody Sees
Scene: The Courtyard β A Busy Weekday Morning
Grandfather's health had begun to decline, and the family routine became increasingly demanding.
Lakshmi accompanied him to medical appointments, Madhava managed the farm, and the sisters handled numerous household responsibilities.
Kethan began taking responsibility for the work that remained.
He washed dishes, swept the courtyard, cleaned the dining table, washed clothes outside, and learned to separate delicate garments from everyday laundry.
The work was harder than he had imagined.
One morning, Athamma found a wet patch on the floor after he finished cleaning.
"Are you cleaning the house or making it dirtier?"
Kethan immediately returned with a cloth.
"I'm sorry, Athamma. I'll clean it again."
Padma prepared to laugh, but Saroja stopped her.
"Let him learn. We weren't born knowing everything either."
Later, Padma taught Kethan how to wash clothes properly and avoid damaging expensive fabrics.
After an exhausting afternoon, Kethan sat on the steps with aching hands.
Padma handed him a glass of buttermilk.
"You work all day and still have office meetings?"
"Sometimes I finish the housework before my meetings begin."
Padma looked at him with new respect.
"My husband says farming is difficult. But I never realised how much work happens inside this house until someone else started doing it."
Kethan smiled.
"Now you understand why Athamma gets angry when something isn't done properly."
Padma laughed.
Their relationship had changed. She no longer saw him merely as the husband who had chosen a different path from her arranged marriage.
She was beginning to see him as a hardworking member of the family.
