Chapter 3 — The Outfit She Chose
Their bedroom · A shy first outing in a new look
A few weeks later, Mira announced that they were going out for snacks and that Aarav would choose his own clothes—but she had one condition: he had to try something he had never worn before.
She laid out a lavender embroidered kurta, matching leggings, and a light dupatta. Beside them lay a small flower clip and a pair of simple earrings.
“I'm not wearing all that outside,” Aarav protested.
“Then wear it in the room first. You decide what happens next.”
He changed behind the bathroom door. When he came out, his long hair fell over the kurta's embroidered neckline. Mira tucked one side behind his ear and fastened a little flower clip near his temple.
“Your hair is getting so long,” she said. “It might reach your mid-back soon.”
He examined himself in the mirror, first uncertain, then intrigued. The outfit looked unfamiliar, but it suited him.
Mira draped the dupatta over his shoulders and showed him how to arrange it comfortably. She didn't laugh at his awkward pose or correct every movement. Instead, she waited until he relaxed.
“Okay,” Aarav finally said. “Let's go for snacks. But you walk beside me.”
They stepped outside together. He kept his eyes lowered at first, but by the time they returned, he was telling her which sweet shop had the best samosas.
That night, he folded the kurta carefully instead of handing it back immediately.
