Chapter 3: The Mark of Possession
Devika’s next demands concerned appearance. She bought cosmetics, wigs, jewellery, and feminine outfits, then scheduled salon appointments without asking Arjun’s permission. She talked about ear and nose piercings as though they were inevitable steps in her private project.
When Arjun refused, she accused him of being ungrateful. Later, she arranged a navel-piercing appointment and tried to pressure him into agreeing.
“You want me to become your doll,” he told her.
Devika smiled coldly. “Dolls don’t argue.”
Arjun eventually understood that the jewellery and clothes were not the real source of her power. It was her ability to make every refusal feel dangerous. She alternated threats with affection, punishment with expensive gifts, and humiliation with promises of a better future.
When she began talking about intimate piercings and demanding access to his body, he drew a line.
“No. My body belongs to me.”
For a moment, her pleasant expression disappeared completely. Then she laughed. “We shall see how long that courage lasts.”
