Chapter 1: The Woman Behind the Smile
Devika had always been the most mysterious person in Arjun’s family. She dressed elegantly, spoke softly, and never raised her voice in front of guests. Yet behind closed doors, she believed that every person around her should obey her without question.
When twenty-four-year-old Arjun lost his job and needed somewhere to stay, Devika offered him a room in her house.
“Stay with me until you can stand on your own feet,” she promised.
For the first few weeks, she treated him kindly. She bought him food, asked about his future, and spoke about her successful lodge business. Then, one evening, she placed a long-haired wig and a box of women’s clothing on his bed.
“Try these on,” she said.
Arjun laughed nervously. “Why?”
“Because I asked you to.” Something in her expression made him stop smiling.
