Shyam remembered how much his wife had loved the rainy season. Whenever the first rain fell, she would stand by the window, watching the downpour. Strands of hair would fall across her face in the breeze, and she would smile as she tucked them behind her ear.
Those memories brought tears to Shyam’s eyes.
He looked at me. Perhaps he saw a glimpse of his wife in my clothes and appearance. But I was not his wife—I was Sagar. At that moment, I realized just how deeply the memory of his wife was still etched in Shyam’s heart.
Shyam’s mother gently placed her hand on his shoulder and said,
“Son, cherish the memories, but don’t lose yourself in them.”
Shyam remained silent.
Outside, the rain continued to pour, while inside, memories of years gone by hung in the silence between them.
Shyam’s gaze rested on me. Perhaps he was searching for a trace of his wife within me. The clothes I wore, my shoulder-length hair, and my transformed appearance were reminding him of days past.
He remained quiet for a few moments, then spoke in a low voice,
“Sagar… seeing you today reminded me of her.”
I looked at him but could not find the words to reply.
Shyam’s eyes held memories of the years spent with his wife. He was perhaps looking for her smile in my face, her simplicity in my mannerisms, and her presence in my attire. He knew I was not his wife, yet on that rainy night, my appearance had stirred up an old, buried pain within him.
Seeing this, his mother said,
“Shyam, this is Sagar… don’t mistake her for someone else.”
Shyam bowed his head.
“Ma, I know,” he said softly, “but today, after so long, it felt as though a lost part of my life had suddenly appeared right before me.” For Shyam, this was all the more peculiar because my height, appearance, and voice—everything—bore a striking resemblance to his wife's. I, too, realized this for the first time that night.
