"And you are my daughter—I will be with you every step of the way."
That day, it felt as though a new hope had been born in our home. When Shyam heard the news, his joy knew no bounds.
Together, the three of us began dreaming about the little guest who was on the way.
Time slowly passed. The day we had all been eagerly awaiting finally arrived.
The sound of a baby’s happy gurgling echoed through the house; a son had been born to us.
When Shyam held his son in his arms for the first time, tears of joy welled up in his eyes. He gazed at the child for a few moments, as if unable to believe that such immense happiness could return to his life.
When Kalavati-ma saw her grandson, her eyes also filled with tears. She lovingly took the baby into her lap and said,
"The courtyard of my home has come alive again."
I looked at Shyam. After years, his face wore the look of serenity I had always longed to see.
Shyam came over, held my hand, and said,
"Vidya, you have made my life whole again." I looked at the child and smiled.
With the arrival of that little one, the old gloom that had long hung over our home seemed to vanish. To Kalavati Ma, he was a grandson; to Shyam, a son; and to me, the greatest responsibility and joy of my life.
That day, I felt as though our family’s story had begun a new chapter—a new generation had arrived, bringing fresh hope to our home after years of sorrow.
Time waits for no one. Our son began to grow up, but Kalavati Ma was aging.
One day, her health suddenly deteriorated. We rushed her to the hospital, but despite the doctors' best efforts, she could not be saved.
When I received the news, I felt the ground slip from beneath my feet.
"Ma..." was all I could utter.
Upon returning home, as I saw her for the last time, I could not hold back my tears. I kept remembering that rainy night when she had first dressed me in the attire of a daughter-in-law.
It was she who had made me feel like I truly belonged. She had entrusted me with the household responsibilities, loved me like a daughter, and embraced me as her daughter-in-law.
As I sat beside her during the final farewell, I wept and said,
"Ma, I will never forget the love and respect you gave me. You didn't just make me the daughter-in-law of this house; you cared for me as if I were your own child."
Shyam, too, sat weeping beside his mother. To him, she was not merely a mother but the greatest source of strength in his life.
We bade her a tearful farewell.
As her bier was carried out of the house, I felt as though an entire generation of our family was departing.
Yet, the values she had instilled in us remained.
Clasping my son close to my heart, I silently vowed,
"Ma, I will pass on the values you taught me to this child. Your legacy will not end here." Mother Kalavati has passed away, but her maternal love, her words, and her blessings have always remained a part of our family.
