Several weeks later, Shiva decided to experiment with his appearance again.
He chose a deep red saree that Saroja had helped him select. He carefully arranged his long hair and tried a simple makeup look.
The process took longer than he expected. His hands trembled as he adjusted the pleats, and he repeatedly checked his reflection.
When he finally stood in front of the mirror, he saw someone unfamiliar.
“Shivani,” Saroja said gently from the doorway.
Shiva turned toward her.
“Do you think I look like that name?”
“I think a name becomes yours when you decide what it means to you.”
Shiva looked back at the mirror. He was still uncertain, and he did not suddenly feel comfortable in every part of his appearance. Yet there was something important about trying something new without being shouted at or threatened.
That evening, he went downstairs with Saroja. He was not ready to seek customers or promise anyone anything. He simply wanted to experience the city while presenting himself differently.
A few people glanced at him. Others ignored him entirely.
Every step felt difficult, but he kept walking.
When he returned to the room, he carefully removed the saree and folded it.
He was still Shiva in many ways: frightened, lonely, and unsure of the future.
But the name Shivani no longer sounded entirely like a stranger.
It sounded like a possibility.
