Chapter 1 — The Jathara Trip and the Unexpected Rule
Arjun was the only boy in a close group of four friends: Maya, Nandini and Keerthi. He was known for his long hair, which he carefully maintained, and the friends often teased him that his hair was longer and better cared for than theirs.
For the annual Sri Renuka Devi Jathara, the four planned a full day of travel, temple darshan, food stalls and festival rides. When they finally reached the decorated temple entrance, they noticed a fictional special rule for this story: devotees entering the inner darshan area had to wear feminine traditional attire.
Maya and Nandini immediately looked at one another. Arjun looked at the notice, then at his friends, and shook his head.
“I came for darshan, not for this,” he said.
The girls did not laugh at him. Instead, they promised that nobody would pressure him beyond what he was comfortable with. They simply asked him to consider trying it as a one-day festival experience.
