Chapter 2 — A Promise in the Mirror
A few weeks later, the three friends had developed a routine around Arjun's growing hair. What had started as a passing idea had become a small part of their friendship.
Maya became the practical one. She reminded Arjun to brush carefully and helped him separate tangles without pulling. Nandu was more interested in styling. She collected photographs of simple long-hair styles and showed Arjun examples of single braids, loose braids and traditional flower arrangements.
One evening Nandu opened her phone and announced that she had found an online flower delivery service.
“If you really want to experience long hair properly,” she teased, “we need flowers too.”
Arjun laughed, but he did not object.
From then on, Nandu began ordering fresh jasmine, kanakambaram and sometimes roses. The flowers became a cheerful surprise whenever they met. Maya would occasionally tuck a small flower behind Arjun's ear during their private styling sessions, while Nandu experimented with different ways of arranging them.
Arjun slowly discovered that he enjoyed the care itself. The brushing, the patient detangling, the feeling of hair being gathered together, and the quiet concentration of his friends all made the process feel special.
There was still no rush. His hair was growing naturally, and every month brought a little more length.
The friends joked that they had accidentally created a new tradition. Arjun simply looked into the mirror, touched the ends of his hair and smiled.
The promise was no longer an experiment. It was becoming part of his everyday life.
