Chapter 1 — The Hair He Wanted to Keep
Arjun had always treated his hair as something ordinary, but lately he had begun looking at it differently. At twenty-seven, with shoulder-length hair already framing his face, he found himself wondering what it would feel like to let it grow much longer. He did not want a sudden makeover or a dramatic change. He simply wanted to see where the journey could take him.
Maya noticed him checking his hair in the mirror and smiled. Nandu, seated nearby in her black saree, listened carefully when Arjun finally admitted that he wanted to grow it long and learn how to care for it properly.
Neither friend made the decision for him. Instead, they turned it into a small promise: no unnecessary cutting, regular care, patience, and plenty of room for Arjun to change his mind if he ever became uncomfortable.
That evening became the true beginning of their new adventure. Maya showed him how to brush gently from the ends upward. Nandu suggested keeping the hair protected at night and avoiding rough handling. Arjun laughed at how seriously they were treating a simple haircut decision.
But to him, it was not only about hair. It was the first time he had openly said, “This is something I want.”
Maya raised her hand as if sealing a pact. Nandu joined her. Arjun smiled and made the promise: he would give his hair time to grow, and his friends would help him enjoy every stage.
