Part 8
Chapter 22: The Nine Yards of Sanctity
The long-awaited morning of *Adhik Maas* broke over the Konkan coast with a soft monsoon drizzle. The air was thick with the scent of wet earth and crushed marigold flowers. Inside the house, the atmosphere was charged with solemn anticipation. The training days were officially over; today, the actual ritual began.
Kamal Aai and Vandana Kaku took complete charge of Rajjo’s morning routine. Ira and Ria were relegated to onlookers, standing by the bed with wide, curious eyes. On the mattress lay a magnificent, nine-yard *Nauvari* saree—a brilliant, rich royal lavender silk featuring intricate gold zari borders.
"Step here, Rajasi," Kamal Aai instructed, her voice dropping into a reverent, focused tone. "A Nauvari is not just a saree. It is the attire of goddesses and warrior queens. You cannot afford a single mistake today."
Because neither Ira nor Ria had ever draped a traditional Nauvari on themselves, the two mothers took over every single step. They guided Rajjo into the tucked-in trousers-style drape, wrapping the heavy nine yards between her legs, creating the traditional back-pleat (*kashta*) that pulled the fabric taut against her thighs.
As Kamal Aai pulled the front pleats firmly to secure the waistband, she shot a fake, disapproving glance at Ira and Ria. "Look at you two modern girls! More than Twenty-five years old and you don't even know how to drape a basic Kashta Nauvari! Here is my Rajasi, coming from Pune, wearing it so gracefully without a single complaint, while you two run around in your trousers!"
Vandana Kaku nodded, adjusting the heavy gold border over Rajjo’s hip. "Honestly, Kamal! Rajasi puts both of our daughters to shame. Look at how beautifully she carries herself. A true, perfect daughter."
Ira and Ria exchanged a rapid, silent look, biting the insides of their cheeks so hard it hurt. The sheer, delicious absurdity of the mothers praising a 27-year-old male IT engineer for being a "more traditional girl" than them brought them to tears of suppressed laughter.
Chapter 23: The Golden Chapter
Once the complicated drape was secured, the mothers began the exhaustive process of decorating Rajjo from head to toe in full, classical Maharashtrian bridal finery (*Solah Shringar*).
* **Head & Hair:** Ira stepped in to assist now, expertly styling the long wig into a sleek, low bun (*ambada*), wrapping it in a fragrant, fresh strand of white jasmine flowers (*gajra*). She pinned a golden *Sun and Moon* hairpin ornament into the hair, topped off with a delicate, pearl-encrusted *Bindi* on her forehead, right above the traditional crescent-shaped *Chandrakor* red mark.
* **Face & Neck:** The diamond nose stud was temporarily upgraded to a heavy, traditional pearl-and-ruby crescent *Maharashtrian Nath* that pressed firmly against her nostril. Around her neck, they layered a short, thick gold *Thushi* choker, followed by a long, heavy *Mohan Mala* gold necklace that rested right above her full, realistic chest.
* **Ears & Arms:** Heavy gold *Jhumkas* dangled from her earlobes, swaying with every breath. Her wrists were adorned with a dense stack of traditional green glass bangles, sandwiched between heavy golden *Kangan* bangles. Higher up, an ornate gold armlet (*Bajuband*) hugged her upper arm.
* **Waist & Feet:** Kamal Aai fastened a heavy, sculpted gold waist-belt (*Kamarbandh*) tightly around Rajjo’s waist, locking the Nauvari pleats in place and accentuating the drastic waist-to-hip ratio created by the heavy chest forms. Finally, silver toe rings (*Jodvi*) were placed on her toes, complementing the thick, jingling silver anklets that graced her ankles.
When the transformation was complete, Rajjo stood rigid in the center of the room.
The struggle was immediate and overwhelming. The Nauvari drape, pulled tightly between her legs, restricted her stride to short, measured shuffles. The heavy gold *Kamarbandh* dug into her ribs, forcing her to stand with a hyper-erect posture. The heavy *Nath* made breathing through her left nostril awkward, while the sheer weight of the gold jewelry, combined with the glued chest forms, made every movement feel like a physical workout.
"Don't hunch, Rajasi!" Vandana Kaku warned gently, adjusting the wide silk *pallu*. "Keep your chest high and walk slowly."
Chapter 24: The Unmasked Devotee
The morning temple visit was under strict, uncompromising orders today.
"No dupatta face-wrapping today, Rajasi," Kamal Aai declared as they prepared to leave for the village shrine. "It is the first day of Adhik Maas, and you are wearing a sacred Nauvari. You cannot cover your face like a modern college girl. The Devi must see your face clearly. You will take only the Nauvari *pallu* over your head."
Rajjo’s heart dropped into her stomach. Exposed. Fully made-up, wearing heavy bridal gold, draped in nine yards of silk, walking through the daylight without a mask.
With her head bowed submissively, the heavy gold Nauvari *pallu* pulled neatly over her jasmine-adorned bun, Rajjo shuffled out of the house. The silver anklets and toe rings produced a heavy, rhythmic *clink-clink-clink* against the red dirt path.
The village was buzzing. Neighbors stopped in their tracks, staring openly at the radiant, magnificently dressed young woman walking alongside the other ladies of her family. Rajjo kept her eyes glued to the ground, her green bangles clinking furiously against her golden armlets as her hands trembled.
At the temple, the line made way for the striking group. As they reached the main sanctum, the head Pandit’s eyes lit up upon recognizing 'Rajasi'.
He approached the group, his hands raised in a deep, traditional blessing. "Aha! Look at the grace of the first day of Adhik Maas!" he exclaimed, looking directly at Rajjo’s fully exposed, blushing face. He sprinkled the holy water generously over her covered head. "May the auspicious stars shower you with eternal happiness, child! May the Devi grant you a groom as steadfast and noble as Lord Shiva himself—a man who will bow before your grace and devotion!"
Beside her, Ria had to turn completely around, burying her face into a stone pillar as her shoulders shook violently with silent laughter. Ira, standing right beside Rajjo, kept a remarkably serene face, though her eyes danced with dangerous, wicked delight.
"Thank you, Pandit ji," Kamal Aai said proudly, bowing her head. "She is indeed a blessing to our house."
Chapter 25: The Whispers of Suspicion
The walk back home was a gauntlet of playful torment and rising tension.
While the mothers walked slightly ahead, discussing the evening's upcoming home *puja*, Ira and Ria flanked Rajjo, keeping their voices low.
"A groom like Lord Shiva, Rajjo Tai!" Ria whispered gleefully, fanning herself. "Pandit ji is really pushing for your wedding this month! Should we start looking for a handsome guy in the upper village?"
"Ria, please... my nose ring is pulling my skin, and this waist belt is killing me," Rajjo whimpered quietly in her soft, trained register, trying not to let her jaw move too much under the heavy *Nath*.
Ira leaned in dangerously close, her shoulder brushing against Rajjo’s silk-draped arm. "Don't listen to Ria," Ira murmured, her voice dripping with sweet, possessesive teasing. "The Pandit ji’s blessing is already working. Your 'groom' is walking right next to you, completely mesmerized by how stunning you look in a Nauvari."
Rajjo blushed a deep, helpless crimson beneath her foundation, the heavy gold *jhumkas* swaying wildly as she looked away. Ira spent the rest of the afternoon finding subtle ways to touch her—fixing the drape of her Nauvari *pallu*, brushing her fingers against Rajjo's waist while pretending to adjust the *Kamarbandh*, and whispering sweet, bold endearments whenever the elders turned their backs.
However, as the afternoon wore on and the preparations for the evening home *puja* began, the atmosphere in the household subtly shifted.
Because Rajjo had to remain in the elaborate Nauvari and full jewelry all day for the evening ritual, the sheer intensity of the intimacy between Ira and 'Rajasi' became hard to completely hide.
While helping Rajjo adjust her heavy gold necklace in the hallway, Ira lingered a second too long, her eyes locked on Rajjo’s face with an unmistakable, tender devotion. Around the kitchen corner, Vandana Kaku stepped out, catching the exact tail-end of the exchange. She stopped, her eyes narrowing slightly as she observed how Ira’s hand rested gently on Rajjo’s waist, and how 'Rajasi' blushed and looked down with an intimate shyness.
Later, in the living room, as Rajjo was kneeling to place the brass lamps near the altar, Kamal Aai watched her son-turned-daughter carefully. She noticed how Ira instinctively stepped in to protect Rajjo’s Nauvari pleats from touching the oil, the two girls exchanging a quick, secret glance that carried far too much silent understanding for two people who were just neighbours and childhood friends.
Kamal Aai frowned slightly, exchanging a quiet, puzzled look with Vandana Kaku across the room.
The ritual of *Adhik Maas* had officially commenced, the female illusion was absolute, but deep within the quiet corners of the house, the tiny seeds of suspicion had finally begun to take root.
