Chapter Nineteen: A Promise Repaid
The campus gates looked the same but for Meenal, they now opened into a new world.
It was the beginning of the fifth semester. Students bustled through corridors with excitement and gossip, unaware that among them walked a girl who had been reborn. Dressed in a crisp blue cotton kurti, her dupatta neatly pinned, Meenal walked past the notice board with her books clutched tight to her chest. She held her head high not in arrogance, but in quiet, hard-earned dignity.
Whispers followed her, as they always did. But now, they weren’t tinged with ridicule or pity. Some were just curious. Others admired her discipline, her attendance, her clarity in answers. One professor even called her “the most precise and consistent mind in the batch.”
That day after class, she returned home to find a black SUV parked outside their small house. Shivram, now a well-dressed and well-fed MLA, stood near the gate talking to Ranga. His voice was gentle, but firm.
“Shivram Mama?” Meenal asked, surprised.
He turned and smiled, a trace of genuine warmth in his eyes. “You look bright, ma. College suits you.”
She smiled, unsure why he was here.
“Come inside,” Ranga muttered, clearly tense.
Inside, Shivram pulled a file from his leather folder and handed it to Meenal. She opened it slowly. Her fingers trembled when she saw the contents new Aadhaar card, PAN, voter ID, and updated college records. All bearing her name: Meenal Ranga.
She gasped. “This is... it’s legal. All of it.”
Shivram nodded. “All processed. You're officially Meenal now. Your old identity buried.”
Ranga’s face hardened. “You already did enough, Shiva. Don’t do more. We don’t know how to repay.”
But Shivram held up a hand. “This isn’t a favor.”
He turned to Ranga, his voice unexpectedly soft. “You remember that night? Back then... when I was just a local rowdy and started my political life, hiding from police, from enemies. You sheltered me. You let me stay in your house when no one else would and you should along with me and face them for me, If not for you, I’d never have survived. I'd never have gone straight. Never become MLA.”
He paused, swallowing back an emotion he wasn’t used to showing.
“And when your Meenal got dismissed... I watched you break. Rage, drink, fight the whole damn world. I couldn’t help you then. You pushed everyone away, even me. But now… now I can.”
He placed another envelope on the table.
“I arranged for full transition surgery during the coming semester break. Best doctor in Chennai. Private care. All expenses covered. No media. No exposure. No trace.”
Meenal looked at him with stunned disbelief.
“I’ve been tracking your grades,” Shivram said, turning to her now with a proud smile. “You’re top of your class. No one expected that. Not even your professors. This... this is your reward, ma. For surviving. For thriving. And for making Ranga anna smile again.”
Ranga looked away, blinking quickly.
Shivram stood to leave. “I don’t want anything in return. Just one thing, Ranga let her fly. Let her become what the world tried to crush.”
As the SUV disappeared down the lane, Ranga and Meenal stood silently in the small front yard, rain beginning to sprinkle again.
Ranga finally looked at her, his voice heavy with emotion. “He’s right. It’s time.”
Meenal nodded, tears running freely now.
This time, they weren’t tears of loss.
They were tears of becoming.
