Chapter Eighteen: The Mirror and the Monsoon
The first showers of July hit the city like an old promise being remembered. Somehow this felt new and a dream come true, in her home, with father in women dress and simple yet her jewelaries, siting and watching rain, it's a dream for her once, she never know it will be true one day but here it is, eventhough she paid heavy price, it all felt dream for her. The tiled roof above their modest home sang with the tapping of the rain as Meenal stood by the window, her eyes tracing the rivulets racing down the glass. Her fingers absentmindedly touched her cheekbone, a habit she’d unknowingly developed ever since the hormonal therapy had begun showing its subtle, undeniable effects.
Her jawline was softer now. Her skin clearer. The rough edges of her old face the one etched into prison records and government archives were fading like old chalk on a slate. The Meenal she saw in the mirror these days was someone else. Still her, but… finally becoming the her she always felt inside.
In the small kitchen, the smell of ginger and cardamom wafted from the boiling tea Ranga was making. He had been watching her. Not with suspicion, nor with concern—but something deeper. A quiet wonder, perhaps. She was transforming right before his eyes.
“Tea is ready, kanna,” he said, placing two steel tumblers on the table. She nodded and sat across from him, wrapping her fingers around the warm metal.
One old melody playing on radio, perfect timing it felt, with the tea and song, watching the rain humming the music, she forgot herself for a moment.
“You’ve changed,” he said softly, not looking at her directly. “Not just your face. The way you sit. The way you speak. Even how you smile.”
Meenal smiled again, this time knowingly. “I feel it too. Like... I’m catching up with myself.”
He looked at her then, his expression unreadable. “You know, the doctor was right. In a few more months, even your amma wouldn’t recognize you. No one from your past will.”
“I don’t want them to,” she whispered. “I don’t want to be her again. I want to be... me, to be with you Appa as you daughter!!!”
Ranga nodded. “Then be you. Every moment.” He reached into his shirt pocket and pulled out a folded piece of paper. It was slightly crumpled, worn at the edges. “This is the new ID request we’ll submit once you're done with college. Shivram has arranged for it discreetly. You’ll be Meenal, officially. New name, new life. No more files marked ‘convict’.”
Tears welled in Meenal’s eyes, but she blinked them back with a silent grace.
Later that evening, she stood in front of the mirror again. Wearing the soft cotton salwar they had bought from the pavement shop last week, her hair tied in a simple braid. Ranga had bought her a new bindi packet too.
As she adjusted the small red dot on her forehead, her fingers trembled slightly. She looked herself in the eye.
“You’re real,” she whispered to her reflection. “You’re really real now.”
Outside, the monsoon continued to fall. Washing the streets, the sky, and something old inside her.
Something was ending. But something far more beautiful had just begun.
