Chapter 22 — The Sarpanch's Final Days
Lakshmi Devi's health had been declining for months. Her illness now made it difficult for her to attend village meetings or supervise development projects.
Sowjanya began helping her mother with the panchayat work.
She visited the village office, reviewed pending files, and listened to complaints from farmers and women. Her experience as a police officer helped her understand the importance of accurate records and fair procedures.
At home, she cared for Lakshmi Devi.
She prepared meals, helped her mother take her medicines, and sat beside her during difficult nights.
One evening, Lakshmi Devi held Sowjanya's hand.
"You have already suffered so much," she said. "You do not have to carry my responsibilities."
Sowjanya shook her head.
"I am not doing this because I have to, Amma. I am doing it because I love you."
Lakshmi Devi smiled.
The village began noticing Sowjanya's dedication. People who once came only to meet the sarpanch now approached her for help.
Sowjanya wore a navy-blue saree that day, her hair neatly braided. Her expression showed concern, but also a growing sense of purpose.
She was becoming the person her mother had always hoped she would be.
Yet every night, she prayed for more time with Lakshmi Devi.
