Chapter 19 — Tears Behind the Smile
Months passed, and the atmosphere in Arjun's house became increasingly difficult.
Atha criticized Sowjanya's clothing, questioned her abilities, and repeatedly reminded her that she was expected to follow the family's traditions. Even when Sowjanya completed her household work, Atha found something to complain about.
One afternoon, during an argument, Atha struck Sowjanya. The sudden violence left her shocked and frightened.
Sowjanya stepped away, holding her cheek. She had never imagined that the home she had entered with such happiness would become a place where she felt unsafe.
Arjun arrived later. Sowjanya told him what had happened.
He was upset, but he asked her to remain patient because Atha was his mother.
Sowjanya stared at him.
"Your mother deserves respect," she said quietly. "But I deserve safety, too."
Arjun looked away.
Sowjanya began keeping a diary. She wrote about her feelings, the insults, and the moments when she wished she could return to Devapuram.
Her smile became something she wore in front of others. Inside, she was slowly losing hope.
She did not want revenge. She wanted dignity, peace, and a home where she could breathe without fear.
For the first time, she began considering whether leaving might be the only way to protect herself.
