Chapter 9 — Boundaries and Fear
The return to hostel life brought familiar worries back into Hemanth's days.
Varshini had not forgotten the makeover, and she continued to treat Hemanth's interest in feminine clothing as an opportunity to control him. Whenever she saw him with Swetha, she made pointed remarks about his appearance.
One evening, Varshini and several seniors gathered in a hostel room. Hemanth had come to return a book to Swetha when Varshini told him to stay.
She began asking him questions about his clothes and hairstyles. Another senior picked up a folded outfit and suggested that he put it on so everyone could see how it looked.
Hemanth shook his head.
“I don't want to do that right now.”
Varshini's expression hardened.
“You were willing to try these things before. Why are you acting differently now?”
“Because I want to choose for myself,” he replied.
The room fell quiet for a moment.
Varshini accused him of being ungrateful. The other students began talking over one another, and Hemanth felt the walls closing in.
He wanted to leave, but his legs felt unsteady.
Swetha noticed his distress and moved beside him.
“He has answered you,” she said. “You need to respect that.”
Varshini scoffed, but Swetha remained firm. She helped Hemanth leave the room and took him somewhere quiet.
Once they were alone, Hemanth began to cry.
“I hate that I get frightened so easily,” he whispered. “I wish I could simply say no.”
“Being frightened doesn't mean you're weak,” Swetha told him. “You've been put under pressure for a long time.”
She reminded him that he could seek help from a trusted adult or college support service if the intimidation continued. He did not have to handle every confrontation by himself.
Hemanth slowly began to calm down.
Later, he wrote in his journal that there were two separate questions he needed to answer. One was how he wanted to express himself. The other was how to protect himself from people who refused to respect his choices.
The answers might take time.
But he was learning that self-expression did not require surrendering his boundaries.
He could enjoy feminine clothing and still say no. He could be curious and still change his mind. He could accept Swetha's help without giving anyone else control over his life.
For the first time, these truths felt strong enough to hold on to.
