The argument began before breakfast.

His mother stood in front of him, furious that he had questioned her latest demand. Shiva tried to explain that he wanted to make his own decisions, but she refused to listen.

“You have lived under my roof for years,” she shouted. “You will do exactly as I say!”

When Shiva remained silent, she grabbed his long hair and pulled him toward the doorway. Pain shot through his scalp as he struggled to free himself.

“Amma, please! Let go!”

She ignored his plea. She pushed him outside, threw his suitcase after him, and slammed the door.

Shiva stood frozen on the doorstep. His hair hung messily around his face, and his eyes filled with tears. He could not understand how the person who had raised him could suddenly treat him like a stranger.

His mother opened the door once more.

“Go to Mumbai,” she ordered. “Find my old friend Saroja at Priya Lodge. She will tell you what to do.”

Before Shiva could ask why, she gave him a telephone number and shut the door again.

He knocked several times. Nobody answered.

By evening, he understood that he could not force his way back into the house. He had a suitcase, a little money, a phone number, and no other place to go.

He sat beside his luggage beneath a streetlight and cried quietly.

For the first time in his life, Shiva had no family to turn to.

He had no idea what awaited him in Mumbai, but he knew that he could not remain on that doorstep forever.
