One Saturday, Maya organised a small gathering with friends and told Arjun that she expected him to attend in a feminine outfit.
Arjun had already planned to spend the evening applying for jobs. When he refused, Maya accused him of wasting the time she had spent helping him.
"I never promised to become the person you imagined," he replied.
The argument grew louder.
Tara stepped between them. "We helped him because he needed somewhere to start. That doesn't mean we own his decisions."
Maya fell silent.
For months, she had convinced herself that her plan was practical and harmless. She had rarely considered how frightening it could feel for Arjun to depend on other people for basic security.
Later that evening, Tara apologised to Arjun.
"You should never have felt that you had to earn our help by dressing a particular way," she said.
Arjun admitted that he was still confused about what he wanted. Sometimes he enjoyed trying a different style. At other times, he wanted to return to familiar clothes and avoid everyone's attention.
Tara told him that uncertainty was not a failure.
The next morning, Arjun dressed in his favourite shirt and trousers, tied his hair loosely behind his neck, and went out to look for work.
It was a small act of independence, but it felt like a turning point.
