Part 10

Chapter 9: The Name That Stayed

The first week

They travelled through Mumbai in a car with tinted windows. Kusum watched the familiar streets. She had driven these roads as Dev, choosing the route, choosing the target. Now she sat in the back seat and watched.

Latha wore an evening dress and simple jewellery, the picture of a woman going to dinner. Kusum wore what she had been given: a silver-grey backless dress that clung to the suit. She had not chosen it. She could not refuse it.

“You’re already responding,” Latha said, eyes on the tablet. “The suit is preparing your body.”

“I’m not.”

The softness in her own voice made her stomach turn.

She tried again.

Lower.

Rougher.

The old voice came for less than a second before the suit's conditioning took over again.

Kusum stopped.

She stared at Latha.

It wasn't the voice itself that frightened her.

It was how quickly her body had learned which one was expected.

She wondered how many repetitions it took before training stopped feeling like training.

Before the body simply called it normal.

They arrived at a tower in Worli. The private elevator opened directly into Madhuri’s penthouse. Floor-to-ceiling windows looked out over the Arabian Sea at twilight.

Madhuri waited in white. She smiled when she saw Kusum.

“Turn around.”

Kusum turned before she had decided to.

When she faced Madhuri again, her eyes were down and her chin was lowered.

She hated how natural the posture felt.

That was the part she could not explain.

If she had been forced into it, she could have hated the people who forced her.

But sometimes her body moved before her anger arrived.

That frightened her.

The House could control her body.

That was obvious.

What frightened her was the possibility that, one day, she might no longer know where the House's instructions ended and her own instincts began.

“Beautiful,” Madhuri said.

Warmth spread through Kusum's chest.

She looked down, embarrassed. A part of her wanted to hear the word again.

“She,” Latha corrected. “This is not a courtesy. Dev is finished. Kusum is what remains.”

Madhuri circled her once, then stopped in front of her.
“Do you know where we are, Kusum?”
“The same building you bought after…”

Kusum stopped.

The hotel came back.

The drink.

The camera.

Madhuri's frightened face.

Then her own hand holding the dropper.

"The Oberoi," she whispered.

Madhuri traced Kusum’s jaw.

“Tonight you serve me. Get on your knees.”

Kusum sank to the marble. Madhuri sat on the edge of the low sofa, parted her thighs and looked down at her.

Kusum understood what Madhuri wanted.

Kusum moved forward. She lifted the hem of Madhuri’s white dress, exposed the bare skin beneath, and pressed her mouth between Madhuri’s legs.

The first taste was clean and sharp. Madhuri’s hand settled in her hair—not guiding, simply claiming.

Kusum followed the technique she had been taught: tongue flat, then pointed, the piercing creating deliberate friction.

Madhuri’s breathing changed almost at once. The suit registered every response and turned it into heat that had nowhere to go.

Madhuri did not speak. She used Kusum’s mouth, her hips shifting in small, controlled movements as she took what she wanted at her own pace.

Kusum’s jaw began to ache. The ache brought more heat through the suit. Her thighs pressed together uselessly against the titanium.

When Madhuri finally tightened her fingers and came, it was quiet, almost private. She held Kusum’s face in place until the last tremor passed, then released her.

Kusum stayed on her knees, lips shining and breathing hard. The suit would not let the arousal subside. It only grew stronger. The pressure became painful.

“Please,” she whispered. The word left before she could stop it.

Madhuri looked down. “Please what?”

Kusum swallowed. The part of her that was still Dev tried to turn the request into a curse. Tears of frustration burned.

“Please… touch me. Let me… I need—”

She could not finish. Begging felt worse than the denial.

She was the one asking now. She was the one waiting for someone else to decide.

Madhuri did not soften.

“On the table. Face down. Ass up.”

Kusum climbed onto the low coffee table. The position was the same one she had once arranged for others. Madhuri opened a drawer, took out a harness and a thick strap-on, and buckled it on with efficient movements. She then pressed the head against the rear opening without lubricant.
“You begged,” Madhuri said quietly. “Remember that.”
She pushed in.

The stretch was intense, immediate and completely one-sided. The suit translated the pressure into sensation.

Kusum’s hands clenched. Sounds left her throat that she no longer recognised—high, broken and needy. Madhuri fucked her with steady, claiming strokes, one hand on her hip and the other between her shoulder blades, holding her exactly where she wanted her.

With every impact, Kusum found it harder to think. The pleasure without release was worse than pain. The part of her that was still Dev tried to fight back, but instead she heard her own voice:

“Please—harder—please—”

The last private corner that still called itself Dev went quiet. Madhuri finished and stayed buried, letting the possession sink in.

Then she withdrew, cleaned herself, and sat back on the sofa as if nothing extraordinary had occurred.

Kusum remained on the table, trembling for the next ten minutes.

She slid to the floor and knelt without being told. Her face was wet. She did not know whether she was crying.

Madhuri sipped the champagne Kusum had poured earlier and studied her.

“She’s ready,” Latha said from the side of the room. She had been recording the whole session.

Kusum looked at her.

“Ready for what?”

“The next stage.”

Madhuri closed the file.

Kusum remained on the floor.

For several seconds she did not move.

Then she looked at her reflection in the dark window.

The House had taught her how to move.

How to speak.

How to smile.

It had taught her what happened when she resisted.

But there was one thing it had not answered.

If everyone called her Kusum long enough, would the name eventually become hers?

She touched the glass.

For the first time, she wasn't sure which answer frightened her more.
