Part 4

By the time Suresh and Lakshmi reached the college the following morning, the matter had gone far beyond an ordinary disciplinary complaint.
The parents of the girl whose shawl had been pulled were there.
They were furious.
Their daughter had gone to college expecting an ordinary day. Instead, she had been caught in an incident that had frightened and humiliated her.
Her father did not hide his anger.
"We intend to file a police complaint."
Suresh lowered his head.
Lakshmi sat beside him, silent.
Arjun sat across the room.
For perhaps the first time in his life, he didn't have an answer.
No joke.
No argument.
No confidence.
Just silence.
The girl's mother spoke next.
"How many times must girls tolerate this kind of behavior and be told that boys were only joking?"
Nobody answered.
The enquiry committee had spent hours reviewing statements, previous complaints, witness accounts and the circumstances surrounding the incident.
The more they investigated, the uglier the picture became.
The ragging had not been an isolated event.
There had been intimidation.
Humiliating remarks.
Cruel jokes.
Repeated incidents involving students who were too frightened to complain.
The fight had simply brought everything into the open.
The committee members explained that the college was considering severe disciplinary action.
Suspension.
Possible expulsion.
And, separately, the possibility of the matter proceeding through the legal system.
The victim's family remained determined to pursue a complaint.
Then the chairman turned toward Arjun's parents.
"We have one question for you before we finalize our recommendation."
Suresh looked up.
"What is it?"
"Are you prepared to accept responsibility for your son's conduct?"
Suresh looked at Arjun.
His expression hardened.
"Yes."
Arjun looked at him.
Suresh continued.
"We are not here to defend him."
Lakshmi finally spoke.
"We spoiled him."
Arjun's eyes moved toward his mother.
She continued, her voice trembling with anger.
"We gave him everything. We never made him answer for his spending. We never made him responsible for the things he did. We kept telling ourselves that he was a boy and that boys needed freedom."
Suresh nodded.
"He's twenty-one. But we helped him become someone who believed that freedom meant he could do whatever he wanted."
Then Suresh said something that even Arjun hadn't expected.
"His monthly spending alone is around one lakh twenty-five thousand rupees."
The committee members looked at him.
Arjun remained silent.
Suresh continued.
"That amount doesn't threaten our family's finances. We can afford it. We have our business, investments and property. That's why we never questioned him properly."
His voice became bitter.
"We thought because we could afford to give him everything, there was no harm in doing so."
He looked directly at his son.
"But clearly, money wasn't the only thing we gave him."
Lakshmi's eyes filled with tears.
"We gave him the belief that other people existed to accommodate him."
Arjun lowered his head.
For once, he couldn't disagree.
Suresh turned back toward the committee.
"If you believe an extraordinary disciplinary punishment is appropriate, we accept it."
The chairman studied him.
"Both of you?"
"Both of us," Suresh said.
Lakshmi nodded.
"Whatever you decide, he will follow it."
The room became quiet.
The other three boys looked at one another.
They had expected angry parents to negotiate.
They had expected influential families to argue.
Instead, Arjun's parents had accepted the punishment before even hearing its details.
The chairman finally explained the proposal.
"We want to give these students one final opportunity to complete their education while confronting the attitudes that led to this incident."
The arrangement would last for the remainder of the academic year.
For Arjun, it would be particularly strict.
"Your son will attend college in feminine presentation for the entire academic year."
Arjun looked up.
The chairman continued.
"He will wear a half-saree as his regular prescribed attire. On exceptional or formally designated occasions, he will wear a saree."
Arjun's face became rigid.
"He will also be expected to conduct himself according to the behavioral requirements established under the disciplinary arrangement—respectfully, modestly and without the aggressive behavior for which he has become known."
The chairman paused.
"This is not a statement that femininity is inferior. Nor are we suggesting that women exist to serve men. The purpose is to confront the attitudes displayed in the incident and force the students to experience a social position they previously treated with contempt."
There was another condition.
"Any serious misconduct during this period will result in immediate academic disciplinary action. The college will also reserve the right to allow the legal proceedings sought by the victims' families to proceed."
Suresh didn't hesitate.
"We accept."
Lakshmi nodded.
Arjun stared at his father.
"Appa..."
Suresh looked at him.
"You will do it."
There was no softness in his voice.
"But, Appa—"
"No."
His father's anger was unmistakable.
"For years we told ourselves that giving you everything was love."
He pointed toward Arjun.
"Now you will learn what responsibility means."
Arjun said nothing.
The silence was finally broken by Rohit.
"Sir..."
Everyone turned toward him.
Rohit swallowed.
"I want my transfer certificate."
Karthik immediately followed.
"Me too."
Vikram nodded.
"We'll continue somewhere else."
Their parents began discussing the arrangements.
Their families had enough money and influence to move them to other colleges.
It would be embarrassing.
It would be expensive.
But their futures could be protected.
Arjun watched them.
Then he looked at his parents.
His father had already made his decision.
His mother had accepted it.
He had never seen them this furious with him.
Yet there was something else in their expressions.
Disappointment.
Deep disappointment.
Arjun looked down.
Then he stood.
"Sir."
The chairman looked at him.
"I accept."
His father turned toward him.
Arjun continued.
"My parents have accepted the punishment."
He took a breath.
"I'll honor their decision."
Rohit stared at him.
"Arjun, don't."
Arjun looked at him.
"You should take your TC."
"But you're staying?"
"Yes."
"You'll have to do all this for an entire year."
"I know."
Rohit shook his head.
"We can stay together."
"No."
Arjun's voice was quiet.
"You have another option. Take it."
He looked at Karthik and Vikram.
"You shouldn't lose your degrees because of what happened."
Nobody spoke.
Then Arjun looked at the committee.
"I'll stay here."
The chairman asked:
"You understand that this arrangement is for the entire academic year?"
"Yes."
"Half-saree as prescribed attire, saree on designated exceptional occasions?"
"Yes."
"Strict behavioral conditions?"
"Yes."
"Possible academic consequences if you violate them, and no guarantee that legal action will not follow?"
Arjun swallowed.
"Yes."
The chairman leaned back.
"And you still accept?"
Arjun nodded.
"I accept."
There was one final matter.
The college cultural festival was scheduled later in the year.
Arjun had participated in performances before.
The chairman looked through the records.
"You have experience performing on stage?"
"Yes."
"Then you will participate in the cultural program this year."
Arjun looked confused.
"In what way?"
The chairman answered calmly.
"In the same prescribed feminine presentation."
Arjun froze.
The thought of standing on a college stage dressed in a half-saree or saree, in front of students who knew exactly what had happened, was almost unbearable.
His first instinct was to refuse.
Then he remembered his own words.
I'll accept.
He looked toward his parents.
Suresh's expression remained firm.
Lakshmi looked devastated, but she didn't intervene.
Arjun took a slow breath.
"Okay."
The chairman nodded.
"You accept that as well?"
"Yes."
Outside the administration building, the four friends stood together.
Rohit's transfer was already being discussed.
Karthik's parents were making arrangements.
Vikram was on the phone.
Prakash stood a little away from them.
Arjun looked at him.
Prakash had escaped the disciplinary arrangement because of Arjun's statement during the enquiry.
He knew exactly what Arjun had done.
"You didn't have to protect me," Prakash said quietly.
Arjun shrugged.
"Go finish your degree."
"But—"
"Go."
Prakash looked at him for several seconds.
Then he nodded.
The three wealthy friends were leaving.
Prakash was staying.
And Arjun was staying too.
But for very different reasons.
The others could walk away from the incident.
Arjun had decided that he wouldn't.
He had accepted his parents' decision.
He had accepted the college's conditions.
And he had accepted that the coming year would be humiliating.
He didn't yet understand what the punishment would teach him.
He didn't know that the half-saree would eventually become only the visible part of a much deeper transformation.
He didn't know that the household he returned to would impose its own expectations.
And he certainly didn't know that, by the end of the year, the punishment would force not only him but his entire family to question what they had always believed about men, women, service and privilege.
For now, however, there was only one certainty.
His old life had ended.
And the next morning, he would have to begin living the consequences.
