The following week began differently.
By Tuesday morning, the atmosphere in college had changed again.
Nobody knew exactly why.
There were whispers near the department office.
A few students kept looking toward the committee room.
And then, shortly before the interval, the news spread.
A girl had gone to the disciplinary committee.
She had made a serious accusation against Archana.
She claimed that Arjun had taken advantage of the disciplinary arrangement and had tried to sexually assault her during the interval.
The committee was furious.
They immediately called Archana.
The HOD was called too.
Several of Archana's classmates followed.
Within minutes, the committee room was crowded.
The girl was crying loudly.
Her story was dramatic.
She spoke through tears, repeatedly saying that she was frightened and that nobody believed her.
Archana stood near the door, stunned.
She couldn't even understand what she was hearing.
The HOD watched her carefully.
Archana looked genuinely confused.
Then one of the girls stepped forward.
“Stop.”
The room became silent.
The girl looked at her.
“What?”
“You're lying.”
The girl immediately began crying harder.
“Why would I lie about something like this?”
Another girl stepped forward.
“Because Archana was with us.”
The accuser shook her head.
“All of you are trying to protect him.”
“Her,” one girl corrected sharply.
The accuser glared at her.
“She is acting like this now, but she's still Arjun.”
The girl's voice rose.
“She took advantage of the punishment!”
Another student immediately interrupted.
“Then tell us exactly when it happened.”
Silence.
“You said interval.”
“Yes.”
“What time?”
The girl hesitated.
“During the interval.”
“Which part of the interval?”
“I don't remember.”
“You don't remember?”
“I was frightened!”
One girl pulled out her phone.
“She was on a call.”
The accuser looked at her.
“All morning.”
Another girl nodded.
“I saw her.”
“She was sitting in the last row.”
“She went to the restroom during the interval.”
“She came back ten minutes later.”
“And when she came back, we were all in the classroom.”
The girls began talking over one another.
The committee members raised their hands.
“Quiet!”
The room fell silent.
One student continued calmly.
“You can check the CCTV.”
Another added,
“You can check the call records.”
“And ask the professor.”
“She was in our view.”
The accuser's story was beginning to collapse.
She became angry.
“All of you are lying!”
One girl moved toward her.
“You—”
She raised her hand.
The HOD immediately caught her wrist.
“Enough.”
The girl froze.
“Don't touch her.”
“But ma'am—”
“I said enough.”
The HOD looked at everyone.
“If the allegation is false, the truth will establish that. Nobody is going to turn this room into another mob scene.”
The students stepped back.
The committee continued questioning the girl.
For nearly fifteen minutes, the story was examined from every direction.
Times.
Locations.
Witnesses.
The classroom.
The interval.
The restroom.
The sequence of events.
Piece by piece, the allegation became impossible to reconcile with what everyone else had observed.
Finally, the committee member leaned back.
“So your allegation is that Archana attempted to assault you during the interval.”
“Yes.”
“And you claim she had the opportunity.”
“Yes.”
The HOD looked at the committee member.
Then at Archana.
She remembered something.
“There is another point.”
She opened the disciplinary documentation.
“As part of the original settlement, Archana is required to wear an administrative protective garment during college hours.”
The committee members knew about it.
The students did not.
The HOD continued.
“It is controlled-access equipment. There are only three authorized keys.”
She pointed toward the documentation.
“One is secured in the office.”
“One is with me.”
“And one is with her mother.”
The committee member examined the signed record.
The HOD checked the office key.
Then verified the documentation.
Everything matched.
She turned toward the girl.
“Whatever else you believe happened, your allegation as described cannot be supported by the circumstances.”
The girl said nothing.
The committee member looked at Archana.
“You may leave.”
Archana didn't move.
She was still processing everything.
The HOD gently touched her shoulder.
“Go to class.”
The committee room had almost emptied.
Archana had already been sent back toward class with the other girls.
But the HOD stopped the girl who had made the accusation.
“You stay.”
The girl looked frightened.
The HOD closed the door.
The committee member sat down again.
The girl remained standing.
“You have made a very serious allegation,” the HOD said.
“I told you what happened.”
“No.”
The HOD's voice was controlled.
“You told us what you wanted us to believe happened.”
The girl began crying again.
“I was scared.”
“Then tell us the truth.”
“I already—”
“If you continue making a knowingly false allegation of this nature, we will have no choice but to consider legal action.”
The girl's face changed.
She suddenly realized they were no longer asking about minor college misconduct.
The accusation she had made could have consequences far beyond the committee room.
She lowered her head.
Then she whispered:
“I lied.”
The committee member leaned forward.
“About what?”
“About today.”
The HOD waited.
“And?”
The girl swallowed.
“I also lied about something else.”
The room became completely silent.
“What?”
The girl looked at the floor.
“The original incident.”
The HOD's expression changed.
“The ragging incident?”
She nodded.
The committee member stared at her.
“Start from the beginning.”
And this time, she did.
She had liked Rohit.
She had told him.
He had rejected her.
She had been humiliated and angry.
Instead of accepting the rejection, she decided to take revenge.
“I wanted him to regret rejecting me.”
She explained how she deliberately provoked him.
She kept pushing him.
Kept making remarks.
Kept escalating the situation.
She involved other students.
She knew exactly what she was doing.
She wanted Rohit angry.
She wanted him to react.
And eventually, he did.
The confrontation became physical.
The shawl caught around his hand when he pushed her away.
She then used the incident to make the situation appear much more deliberate and violent than it had been.
She had presented herself as the completely innocent victim.
She had cried.
She had made the situation emotional.
She had allowed everyone to believe that Rohit and the others had simply attacked her without provocation.
And it had worked.
The college had launched its enquiry.
The boys had been investigated.
The pattern of ragging and misconduct had been uncovered.
The committee had punished them.
Three transferred.
Arjun remained.
And the disciplinary arrangement that had transformed his entire life had followed.
The girl wiped her face.
“I succeeded.”
The HOD stared at her.
“You deliberately created the situation.”
“Yes.”
“You took revenge because Rohit rejected you.”
“Yes.”
“And you allowed four students to suffer the consequences.”
The girl couldn't answer.
The HOD stood.
Her anger finally broke through.
She slapped the girl.
The room went completely silent.
“Do you understand what you have done?”
The committee members were stunned.
They had believed the original incident was straightforward.
They had never imagined that the person who had presented herself as the innocent victim had deliberately engineered the confrontation.
The girl began sobbing.
The HOD turned away for a moment.
Then looked back.
“How many lives did you change?”
The girl had no answer.
Three students had left.
Arjun had remained.
His entire final year had been transformed.
His family had punished him.
His friends had been separated from him.
His reputation had been destroyed.
And now the committee had learned that the original incident had been deliberately manipulated by the person who had claimed to be its victim.
The committee member finally spoke.
“Then why?”
The girl looked up.
The HOD turned toward her.
“Why did you make another accusation today?”
The girl was silent.
The HOD's voice became sharper.
“Why did you try to do it again?”
The girl shook her head.
“I don't know.”
The HOD stared at her.
“You don't know?”
The girl began crying again.
“I was afraid.”
“Afraid of what?”
“That she was changing.”
The HOD frowned.
“Who?”
“Arjun.”
She corrected herself quickly.
“Archana.”
“What about her?”
The girl wiped her tears.
“The girls were changing.”
The HOD understood.
“They were beginning to like her?”
She nodded.
“They were beginning to see her differently.”
She looked terrified.
“She was studying.”
“She was working.”
“She was helping people.”
“They were talking about her.”
Her voice trembled.
“I was afraid that eventually they would know the truth about the original incident.”
The HOD stared at her.
“So you wanted to stop that.”
“Yes.”
“How?”
The girl hesitated.
Then whispered:
“I wanted to make her go down completely.”
The committee member looked at her.
“Explain.”
“I thought if I made one more accusation…”
She swallowed.
“…a serious one…”
“…everyone would believe she hadn't changed.”
The HOD's expression hardened.
“You wanted to destroy the positive image she was developing.”
“Yes.”
“You wanted the girls to turn against her again.”
“Yes.”
“And that's why you invented today's accusation?”
“Yes.”
The HOD couldn't believe it.
“You were afraid that Archana would finally be seen as a good person.”
The girl nodded.
“So you tried to manufacture another incident.”
“Yes.”
The HOD slapped her again.
“Enough!”
The girl covered her face.
“You already manipulated one incident and destroyed four students' lives.”
Her voice shook with anger.
“And when you saw one of them slowly rebuilding his life, you decided to do it again?”
The girl sobbed.
“I was scared.”
“You weren't scared.”
The HOD's voice became cold.
“You were afraid of losing control of the story.”
The girl said nothing.
The committee members exchanged stunned looks.
The recording continued.
Every confession had been captured.
Every admission.
Every detail.
The original incident would have to be reopened.
Not because the boys had done nothing wrong.
But because the committee now knew that the circumstances surrounding the incident had been deliberately engineered.
The disciplinary punishment could no longer be evaluated without considering that revelation.
The committee member finally switched off the recorder.
“We will reopen the original investigation.”
The girl's face went pale.
The HOD looked at her one final time.
“You thought you were getting revenge.”
She paused.
“But you didn't understand what revenge becomes when innocent people get trapped inside it.”
The girl lowered her head.
“Go.”
She slowly walked out.
The door closed behind her.
For several seconds nobody spoke.
The committee room was completely silent.
Then one member finally said:
“Four students…”
The HOD nodded.
“Four.”
Three had already left.
One had stayed.
And the one who stayed had spent months carrying a punishment that might have been built upon a story that was never as simple as they had believed.
The HOD looked toward the door through which Archana had left.
She suddenly felt sick.
They had wanted to teach one arrogant young man accountability.
But now the committee had to confront something much harder:
Had their punishment itself been fair?
