Chapter 5: The Price of Peace

The palace gates looked darker when they rode back empty-handed.

Mud still clung to their boots and the horses’ flanks. The rain had stopped only an hour earlier; the courtyards shone black and reflective under the late-afternoon light. Mahaveer was already waiting, arms crossed, jaw set like stone. The moment Surya’s boots touched the ground, guards closed in.

“Arrest him,” Mahaveer ordered.

Surya did not resist. The iron of the manacles felt colder than it should have. Kiran started forward; two spears crossed in front of his chest. The captain’s face was grey.

They took Surya to the old holding rooms beneath the east wing—the ones with no windows and a single iron-bound door. The stone was damp. The air smelled of old straw and rust. He sat on the narrow bench and waited.

Hours passed. The light that leaked under the door turned from gold to blue to nothing.

When the door finally opened it was King Dev who entered first, followed by Queen Leela, Mahaveer, and Kiran. The king looked older than he had eight days ago. The lines around his mouth had deepened into something permanent.

He did not sit.

“She’s gone,” he said. Not a question.

Surya kept his eyes on the floor. “I couldn’t force her, Father. She’s my sister.”

Queen Leela stepped closer. Her voice was softer than usual, but there was iron underneath. “Surya. You know what this means. The real Chandrika is gone.”

She paused. The silence stretched until it hurt.

“But you are here. The gods were cruel enough to make you twins. With the right… help… the kingdom will still get its princess.”

Surya’s head snapped up. “What?”

Mahaveer’s expression did not change, but something ugly moved behind his eyes. Kiran, standing rigid in the corner, looked as if he had been struck.

Kiran’s voice, when it came, was hoarse and breaking.

“I… found a way.” His hands were shaking so hard he had to press them against his thighs. “The forbidden ones. The Rasayana. It reshapes flesh and bone—slowly, painfully. It will not simply change your body. It will hunt down every masculine instinct you have left and dissolve it.”

Tears stood in his eyes. He did not wipe them away.

“You’ll hate me for this. I never thought I would be the one to erase my prince.” He looked at Surya with raw anguish. “Say the word and I will take the change too. I’ll become your handmaiden. Your shadow. Whatever is left of me will stay beside whatever is left of you.”

The room was deathly quiet. Kiran’s shoulders shook once before he forced them still.

King Dev finally sat, as if his legs would no longer hold him. “This is not what I wanted for you, my son.” His voice was heavy with genuine regret. “But you left me with no choice. If the marriage fails, Kalakeya will come. Our people will starve before the next harvest. One life… or thousands. The choice is cruel, but it is still a choice.”

Queen Leela touched Surya’s arm. Her fingers were cold.

“You have always carried your duty quietly, even when it hurt. This would be the greatest duty of all. I’m proud of the man you are…” Her voice caught. “…and of the woman you may have to become. We will stop looking for your sister. The secret dies here. You will be Chandrika. And Mahanagar will live.”

Surya sat down heavily on the stone bench. His hands would not stop shaking. He looked at Kiran, who gave him a small, devastated nod—already accepting whatever came next.

“I don’t want this,” Surya whispered.

Images came unbidden: riding into battle with Kiran at his side, the weight of a sword in his hand, the easy brotherhood they had shared since childhood. The maps. The eastern forests he had once dreamed of charting. All of it would vanish.

“I know,” the king said. “None of us do.”

Surya stood and began to pace the narrow cell. The manacles clinked with every step.

“Everyone keeps saying the kingdom needs me,” he said. “No one has asked what I want.”

Silence filled the chamber.

“Not like this.”

He stopped in front of his father.

“I won’t become Chandrika because you command it.”

He turned toward Kiran. The other man’s face was wet.

“I will become her because I choose to save this kingdom.”

The words tasted of ash and iron.

He removed his signet ring—the one that marked him as prince—and placed it carefully on the floor between them.

“The prince disappears because I ordered it.” His voice cracked, but he did not look away. “Not for glory. Not even for my father. Because if I don’t… thousands will suffer. And I will not be the man who let them.”

Kiran bowed his head, but not before Surya saw the same terror, the same love, the same terrible resolve reflected back at him.

The decision was made.

Tomorrow the real work would begin.
