Chapter 1: The Alliance to save the Kingdom
Bronze lamps cast flickering light across Mahanagar’s great hall. Servants moved like ghosts along the walls, refilling glasses of spiced wine and clearing platters of grilled river fish. The air smelled of grill, smoke, and tension. Mahanagar was a small river kingdom, it always lived uneasily between powerful neighbors and its borders constantly tested. Kalakeya raiders stealing grain caravans and killing traders was the latest provocation.
Surya stood at the head of the long teak table. At twenty-two, he was the younger prince — the one who studied maps and suggested strategies while others rode to battle.
His father, King Dev, leaned forward on the carved throne. His voice filled the chamber without effort.. "Without Viran's help , we're finished. The Kalakeya bandits have bled our granaries, killed our people."
Beside him sat Queen Leela, Surya’s mother. Her heavy gold bangles clinked as she adjusted her crimson sari. Her gaze flicked toward Surya now, assessing, measuring.
"And the marriage with Viran and your sister seals it," she murmured. "You must convince Princess Chandrika, she is your twin after all and loves you the most."
The words landed heavy in Surya’s chest. Marriage. Duty. He was meant to win alliances with steel and cunning, not by handing his sister over like a bargaining chip.
Across the table, his half-brother Mahaveer lounged against a pillar. Tall, battle-scarred, and radiating easy confidence, Mahaveer was everything the court celebrated. Surya had spent his life in that long shadow — the careful second son who studied maps while his brother returned from raids with enemy heads and songs in his name.
Mahaveer’s eyes flicked over to him with that familiar half-smirk. “Easy, mapmaker. Leave the bleeding to me. You just keep that pretty sister of ours smiling for the alliance.”
Mahaveer leaned closer, voice dropping so only Surya could hear. “And if she refuses, you’ll make her see reason. in any way necessary.”
The words carried a sting, but Mahaveer followed them with a rough clap on Surya’s shoulder — hard enough to bruise. The weight of his brother’s hand made Surya feel suddenly inferior.
He forced a nod in return.
Mahaveer nudged his shoulder.
"Remember when you tried to sneak into Father's war room?"
Surya frowned.
"I was eleven."
"You got lost."
"The corridors all looked the same."
"You walked into Mother's embroidery room instead."
Leela hid a smile behind her cup.
Surya sighed.
"I maintain it was poor palace design."
Even the king chuckled.
The laughter lasted only a few heartbeats before the maps reclaimed everyone's attention.
As he thought about his twin, a familiar protectiveness stirred within him.
Then came the rustle of bangles.
Surya turned toward the terrace. Princess Chandrika stood there, her dark hair falling in loose waves, moonlight catching on her deep blue lehenga. A veil framed her face, shifting with the breeze .
Chandrika—or Chandra, as he had always called her—was his younger twin by barely two minutes. They had been thick as thieves since birth; he had always treated her with the fierce protectiveness of an elder brother.
Yet tonight something felt different. Her smile seemed a touch too bright,, as if she were holding a secret behind her teeth.
She met his eyes without flinching. "Your Highness." Her voice was clear and musical, though it carried a faint tremor only he could hear. She offered a half-bow.
Up close, she smelled of fresh roses. Surya bowed in return. “Chandra,” he said , the old nickname slipping out before he could stop it.He missed the next sentence entirely.
Her gaze lingered on Surya a moment longer than usual — not with her usual playful mischief, but with a deeper expression.
As maps unrolled and voices haggled over trade routes and dowry, Surya kept stealing glances at his twin. He caught her staring toward the river more than once.
Outside, thunder rumbled faintly over the distant mountains.
Contracts of alliance were being forged tonight. But Surya couldn’t shake the feeling that these new bonds might reshape his life forever.
The old priestess, watching from across the hall, looked at Surya instead of Chandrika. She frowned.
Later that night Mahaveer ordered double patrols around Chandrika's quarters.
He suspected the palace infiltrated with Kalakeya's spies.
Mahaveer checked the guards again. The captain sighed but said nothing.
Somewhere in the shadows beyond the river, Kalakeya’s spies kept watch and relayed all the news to thier kingdom.
