Part 4

"Grandmother, Who, Me?"

Chapter 4: The Dangerous Promise

Satish’s POV

The afternoon sun blazed through the windows as I stared at my laptop screen, heart pounding with excitement. After three weeks of intense coding, late nights, and endless revisions, I had finally delivered the massive e-commerce platform for my biggest client yet. The payment confirmation email had just landed in my inbox, a sum large enough to cover several months of comfortable living.

I couldn’t wait.

I jumped up from my chair, nearly knocking over my coffee tumbler, and ran barefoot into the hall. Shreya was sitting on the sofa, flipping through a pregnancy book, one hand absentmindedly resting on her belly.

“Shreya!” I shouted, grinning like an idiot. I practically slid across the cool tiles and wrapped my arms around her in a big, enthusiastic hug, lifting her slightly off the sofa. “I did it! The project is complete. Huge payout! We’re set for months!”

She laughed, hugging me back tightly, her face buried in my shoulder. “That’s amazing, da! I’m so proud of you.”

I pulled back, still holding her hands, unable to stop smiling. “This is perfect timing. With the baby coming, I’ve been thinking… maybe I should take a proper break from heavy freelancing. No more all-nighters. I can be home full-time, help you with everything, doctor visits, cooking, massages, whatever you need. I want to be there for you and the little one.”

Shreya’s eyes softened. She smiled, but there was something different in it, not just happiness. A deeper sparkle. A quiet calculation. It was subtle, but I knew her too well to miss it.

“Are you sure?” she asked gently, squeezing my hands. “No problem with not working for a while? You love your coding.”

“Absolutely sure,” I said without hesitation. “You and the baby are more important than any project. I can always pick up small jobs later if needed.”

She looked at me for a long moment, searching my face. Then, in a soft, almost shy voice, she asked, “Do you love me, Satish?”

The question caught me off guard. I laughed lightly. “Of course I do. More than anything.”

She bit her lip, that different smile returning. Then she leaned in closer, her voice dropping to a whisper that sent a strange shiver down my spine.

“Then… can you be the mother-in-law for me?”

The words hung in the air between us.

I blinked, thinking I had misheard. “What?”

Shreya didn’t laugh. She didn’t pull it back as a joke. Instead, she held my gaze steadily, her hands still in mine.

“You heard me. Be my mother-in-law, Satish. Not just for one silly night. Properly. Help me through the pregnancy the way only a loving amma can. I know it sounds crazy… but after that night, I can’t stop thinking about it. You were so caring, so fun. If you can do that for me… I think I would feel complete.”

My mouth opened, but no words came out immediately. The memory of that ridiculous night, the saree, the clumsy acting, her laughter, flashed through my mind. It had been fun. Harmless. Just to make her happy.

But this… this was something else entirely.

I swallowed hard, my heart beating faster. Part of me wanted to laugh it off. Another part, the part that hated seeing that quiet sorrow in her eyes, hesitated.

Shreya waited, watching me with hopeful, loving eyes.

And in that moment, standing there in our sunlit hall, I felt the first real crack in my comfortable world.

Unbelievably amazing...the shifts in presenting diff povs in chronological order makes this so effective and pleasant. Believe me this is one of the or should say the best story I have read in the last 5-6 years. You are a magician with this story. Gosh the fluidity in emotions and the integrity in characters made it more of noble than fantasy. Truly waiting for more...💕

Also everytime i decide to post, i try my best to post the entire story as I don't like leaving ppl yearning and guessing. Hence I'll post all the parts within today itself. But I can't promise immediately posting the other titles as they still need completed, proof checked and for that it's completely depended on my mood 👉👈
